Dr James Beatty offers the full spectrum of advanced eye care and ophthalmic surgery, with special interests in laser vision correction, micro-incision cataract removal surgery, and the long-term management of glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Dr Beatty is currently the only resident laser eye surgeon based in the Helderberg area. Ensuring the highest standard of technology and patient care, all laser vision procedures take place at the specialised Atlantic Eye Centre in Cape Town.
All consultations, screenings and other eye surgeries take place conveniently right here at our main practice at the Somerset Eye Centre in Somerset West.
Our practice proudly serves patients across Somerset West, Strand, Gordon’s Bay, Stellenbosch, and the greater Cape Town and Overberg regions.

Mariaan is the optometrist working alongside Dr Beatty, providing dedicated support in patient care. She plays a key role in conducting comprehensive laser procedure screenings to determine patient suitability. Mariaan is also actively involved in post-operative examinations, ensuring optimal recovery and visual outcomes for each patient.
Natasha De Witt
Ophthalmic Assistant
Natasha is our dedicated ophthalmic assistant who plays a vital role in supporting Dr Beatty during patient consultations. She ensures the consultation room runs efficiently, contributing to a seamless experience for both doctor and patients. In addition to her clinical support, Natasha takes on the significant responsibility of coordinating theatre days. Her strong industry knowledge makes her an invaluable member of the team.
Tharina Schoeman
Practice Manager
Tharina is the practice and accounts manager, providing strong leadership while keeping the team organised and on track. She balances this with a great sense of humour and genuine kindness toward patients, creating a welcoming and supportive environment. Tharina ensures patients receive the optimal benefit of their medical aid cover while also providing patients with clear, transparent quotations. Her attention to detail and approachable nature make her an essential part of the team.

The Somerset Eye Medical and Surgical Centre was the vision of a group of like-minded ophthalmologists, who wished to create a dedicated eye care centre of excellence.

CURE DAY HOSPITAL Somerset West is a new state-of-the-art healthcare facility in the Helderberg area. It is conveniently situated just off the R44/Broadway Road. The hospital is 20 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and 30 minutes from central Cape Town. This modern-day hospital is ideally suited for patients in need of same-day surgery. It rivals the best in the world in terms of patient care, expertise, equipment and staffing. It consists of 20 beds and 3 theatres (one of which is a dedicated eye theatre).

Atlantic Eye Laser Centre brings together the expertise of Dr. James Beatty and Dr. Daemon McClunan, two leading ophthalmologists dedicated to advanced laser eye surgery. Their shared goal is simple: helping patients achieve clear vision and greater freedom from glasses or contact lenses.
