SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) Eye Surgery
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is an advanced third-generation laser refractive eye surgery that corrects vision errors such as myopia and astigmatism. This procedure reshapes the cornea to enhance the focus of light on the retina. Unlike traditional LASIK, SMILE is “flapless”, using a single femtosecond laser to create a small lenticule inside the cornea, which is then removed through a tiny (2-4mm) incision.
What to Expect
Procedure: The process is painless and typically takes 10–15 minutes, with the laser operating for approximately 30 seconds. No stitches are needed, and the upper corneal layer remains largely intact.
Advantages over LASIK:
- No Flap: Eliminates risks related to corneal flap displacement.
- Less Dry Eye: Preserves more corneal nerves, resulting in lower rates of post-operative dry eye syndrome.
- Stronger Cornea: Preserves corneal structural integrity (biomechanical strength).
- Recovery: Patients often see clearly within 24 hours, with most returning to work and driving within 1–2 days. It is particularly favoured by athletes and those in contact sports.
- Suitability: Ideal for candidates with myopia up to -10 diopters and astigmatism up to 3 diopters.
- Risks: Complication rates are extremely low. Potential side effects include temporary vision fluctuations, glare/halos at night, ectasia and infection.
FAQ
SMILE is often preferred for thinner corneas or higher prescriptions as it preserves more structural integrity and uses a 4mm incision compared to LASIK’s 20mm incision, significantly reducing the risk of postoperative dry eyes.
No. Numbing eye drops are used, making the procedure painless. You may feel a slight pressure or heaviness during the procedure.
Most patients see a significant improvement by the next day, with full stabilisation usually ranging from weeks to months.
A lid supporter keeps your eyes open. The laser treatment takes only about 25–30 seconds, and while you should try to keep your eyes still, the system is quick.
You should rest for 24 hours. After that, you can usually work, shower, and drive. However, you should avoid swimming, using eye makeup, or rubbing your eyes for at least two weeks.
Complications are rare, but can include temporary dry eyes, glare, or under-correction. Because there is no flap, complications related to the corneal flap (common in traditional LASIK) are completely eliminated.
Candidates generally need stable vision for at least 12 months, good overall eye health, and to be at least 20+ years old. You must avoid wearing contact lenses for a few days to a month prior to the consultation to ensure accurate measurements.
